The Importance of Quality Assurance

In recent years, the sophistication and complexity of advanced imaging and radiotherapy (RT) used in clinical trials has increased significantly and continues to grow with the introduction of new imaging and radiotherapy modalities and techniques.  Now more than ever, rigorous imaging and RT quality assurance procedures are paramount to help ensure:

  • Participating institutions have the proper equipment and can perform the appropriate imaging or radiotherapy techniques required to successfully carry out a specific clinical trial,
  • The performance of imaging scans and radiotherapy complies with the most current version of the research protocol,
  • Minor and major research protocol deviations are quickly identified and remedied,
  • The clinical images and data collected can be used confidently in the analysis of the clinical trial’s primary and secondary aims,
  • The medical community can be confident of the published clinical trial results for future clinical decision making.

 

Robust quality assurance policies and processes provide confidence that quality requirements are met. It includes planned and systemic actions established to ensure that a trial is performed and the data are received, assessed, validated, and archived in compliance with the research protocol, Good Clinical Practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
